How long ago could I have taken the photo?

The photo must be representative of Kingman as it is now. It must be timeless or current enough that a viewer could not tell by looking at it that it wasn’t taken yesterday.

What rights to my photograph do I retain?

You retain rights to your photo and may use it as you see fit. However, by submitting the media release form and accepting a prize in any category, you grant the City (and those authorized by the City) a royalty-free, world-wide, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works of the submissions, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion of the magazine City and its website, exhibition, and commercial products (this includes any sales of products utilizing the photograph), including but not limited to City publications. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. The Smithsonian City will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.

Will you change the category if you think I put my photograph into the wrong one?

Yes, the judging committee will treat the submitted category as a recommendation by the photographer. The judges may select images winners for one category that were submitted in a different category.

Will you accept photos with watermarks?

No, all files must be submitted without any watermarks.

What size should my digital image be for uploading with the online submission form?

Photographs must be submitted in .jpeg, .jpg or RAW format, at least 6,000 pixels wide, 3,000 pixels high, and no larger than 50 MB.

May I enter the same photograph into multiple categories?

No, each photograph must be submitted in one of the three categories. However, the judging committee will treat the submitted category as a recommendation by the photographer. The judges may select images winners for one category that were submitted in a different category.

Do you accept black-and-white photographs?

No, all photos must be in full color.

Can photographs be cropped, manipulated, or enhanced?

Photos can be cropped and/or have minor color corrections, but it is discouraged. All submissions must be no less than 6,000 pixels wide and 3,000 pixels high.

Do I need model release forms for people in my photo?

Yes, you will need to provide a completed model release form for anyone taken in your photo.

When will the winners and finalists be announced?

Winners will be announced in the Spring after the committee has a change to review and select all finalists. This is anticipated to be sometime March through May, depending on the number of submissions.

Can I enter if I live outside of Kingman, AZ?

Yes, we are accepting submissions from photographers who live anywhere in the world, however the photo must have been taken in the Kingman area. 

How do I submit my photograph?

Photos can only be submitted electronically through the submission form at www.choosekingman.com/photocontest/submission

Submissions will not be accepted by email or by mail.

Can I submit a photo on someone else’s behalf?

No. We will not accept photos submitted on another person’s behalf, the original photographer must accept the terms agreeing that they, as the submitting party, are the original creator of the image.

I share an email address with another person. Can we both enter under the same email address?

Each contestant must use a unique email address for their photo submission. If the same email address is used for separate submissions by two persons, they will be treated as one contestant and will be subject to the cap of 2 submissions per category and 6 submissions in total.

How many photos can I enter into the contest?

Contestants may enter up to 2 photos per category for a total of 6 submissions.

Will I be notified if I was NOT chosen as a finalist or winner?

You will not receive any notifications for any submissions that were not selected as a finalist or winner in any categories.

Who selects the winners?

The Judging Committee will consist of members from City management and the Economic Development Advisory Commission.

What are the prizes?

Each of the three categories will have a grand prize winner with a $500 prize. Each category will include a number of finalists that will be eligible for a $100 prize each. Total prize monies that any contestant may receive is $500 combined.
