What do a hardware store, a Route 66 diner, a neighborhood pest control company and a vintage Airstream marketplace have in common? They're all family-owned businesses helping shape the character, economy and spirit of Kingman, Arizona.
On June 23, Kingman Economic Development and communities across the country celebrate National Family-Owned & Operated Businesses Day, recognizing the important role family businesses play in preserving local character and strengthening local economies. In Kingman, family-owned businesses are more than just part of the economy—they are part of the community's identity.
"Family-owned businesses help give Kingman its character," said Bennett Bratley, Executive Director of Economic Development for the City of Kingman. "They create jobs, build relationships and invest in our community for future generations."
The Businesses That Built Kingman
Several long-standing family-owned businesses have become local institutions, helping define Kingman's character and preserving the city's rich history.
Since 1987, Calico's Restaurant has served residents and visitors along Historic Route 66 in downtown Kingman. Now serving customers across four generations, the family-owned restaurant has built its reputation on quality food, consistent service and a welcoming family atmosphere that keeps guests coming back time and again.
Another of Kingman's most favorite stops for Route 66 travelers is Mr. D'z Route 66 Diner. The Dunton family transformed the historic Kingman Café property into a nostalgic 1950s-style diner in 1992, preserving a piece of local history while creating an iconic destination known for its classic diner experience and famous root beer floats.

While many family-owned businesses have deep roots in Kingman, new entrepreneurs and family-run ventures continue to add energy and opportunity to the local economy.
Founded by the Jaarveth family, DeadEye Pest Control has built its reputation on treating every customer and every property differently. The family-owned business takes pride in providing customized pest control solutions that are safe, effective and affordable, ensuring local homes and businesses receive the personalized attention they deserve.
Mohave Meat Co. may not be new to Kingman, but the family-owned business is finding a new way to meet customers face-to-face through its recently opened retail butcher shop. The new storefront makes it easier than ever for residents to enjoy locally sourced meats and specialty products.
Ready for a one-of-a-kind Route 66 experience? Tin Can Alley on 66 brings a unique and fun concept to Kingman's business community and tourism industry. Featuring restored vintage Airstream trailers transformed into retail spaces and visitor accommodations, the family-owned destination celebrates Route 66 heritage while creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
"One of the things that makes Kingman special is seeing new family-owned businesses grow alongside companies that have served the community for generations," Bratley said. "That mix of tradition and innovation is a big part of our success."
The Business of Family
Family-owned businesses bring something unique to a community. Their owners often live where they work, support local organizations and make decisions with future generations in mind. Their success contributes directly to a stronger local economy, a vibrant downtown and a higher quality of life for residents.
As Kingman celebrates National Family-Owned & Operated Businesses Day, it also celebrates the families behind these businesses—past, present and future—whose dedication continues to make Kingman one of Arizona's most welcoming and opportunity-rich communities.
